How did Saint Valentine come to be associated with bringing couples together in love?…There is little known on this kindhearted saint but several legends and history reveal insight into the passionate link he has with our February 14th celebrated day of love. St. Valentine was a roman priest, who lived around the year 250, during the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius II. During St. Valentine’s life, he was known as the protector of lovers. Claudius II banned marriage as a way he could recruit men into battle if men didn’t have wives to return to. St. Valentine came to the aid of young men and women and secretly married young couples who came to him in love. Soldiers were sparse and this enraged the emperor sending him to prison. St. Valentine eventually courageously converting many hearts to Christianity was martyred. He was known to write a letter that was delivered by a dove and simply signed…Your Valentine.
