Upon a recent brief visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels in downtown Los Angeles, I peeked into an alcove before going into the main Church where there was a unique collection of St. John Paul II photographs. Humbly astonished I stopped to view the sweet instances captured in pictures from his youth. Up to that moment I had only seen distinguished photos of him as Pope from the phenomenal holy path he lived. As I stood looking at this man of extraordinary accomplishments, I was in awe at the pictures displaying most ordinary events: standing by his bike and the mundane but necessary task of shaving. I was overwhelmed with the grace in his life, his dynamism while professing peace to all, and the realization that this daring bold man, canonized a saint, had a childhood, an adolescence full of challenges and hardships as any man who got up every day doing ordinary tasks. His difference was hearing and heeding his calling and HOW he did his ordinary tasks–I see clearly now, as he grew, everything was done through his noble dedication to following Jesus.

His conviction to his faith shines through his words: “It is in Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; He is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; He is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is He who provoked you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is He who urges you to shed the masks of false life; it is He who reads in your heart your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle.”…
