What Does it Mean?

My three year old is just now starting to master properly making the Sign of the Cross and his little one-year-old sister is trying her best to make some resemblance of what we do before every prayer. It’s adorable. I can only imagine how much it pleases God to see their purity and effort! The Sign of the Cross is one of the first prayers we teach our children. Yet when was the last time you thought about the words? Or about the meaning behind the action of blessing ourselves with a cross? What are we really professing when we make the Sign of the Cross?

Fr. Mike Schmitz from Ascension Press speaks beautifully about the 3 things the Sign of the Cross reminds us of, and the beauty and power of this simple yet profound action we do when we bless ourselves in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

3 Things to Know About the Sign of the Cross

1) The first thing, the most obvious thing is that God is a Trinity: a key core belief in our faith.

2) When you trace the sign of the Cross on yourself what you’re tracing on yourself is your worth: it’s your price tag.
How much are you worth?  A million dollars? A billion dollars?  The Sign of the Cross is your price tag. It’s how much you are worth according to God. You are worth His very life and His very death. As often as you make the Sign of the Cross you’re claiming your price tag.

3) It reminds you of why God made you. So often as you find yourself kind of not knowing the meaning of life, or not knowing if your life has a purpose, you can make the Sign of the Cross and it reminds you that you’re here for a reason. You’re here to know God, to love Him, and to serve Him in this life so as to live with Him forever in the next. That’s all wrapped up in the Sign of the Cross.
